Course overview

The incidence of diabetes is rising in Australia with around 1 in 25 Australians have diabetes, which is up from 1 in 40 since 1995 (ABS, 2011). Diabetes is responsible for an enormous public health and social burden, and is one of the top 10 causes of death in Australia (AIHW, 2011). Diabetes is placed in the top nine national health priorities. 

Deakin University’s Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education prepares appropriately qualified health professionals for specialty practice in diabetes education.

The Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education is conducted by the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This course prepares eligible health professionals for specialty practice in diabetes education, and is accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA).

If you are not registered in Australia as a health practitioner with the appropriate registering body you will not be able to seek credentialing with the ADEA, nor will you be able to undertake a clinical placement in Australia.

On completion of the Graduate Certificate course, you will be eligible to apply to continue your studies towards the Graduate Diploma of Nursing Practice and/or the Master of Nursing Practice.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA). In addition, by completing the clinical practicum and seminar components of the course you may be eligible to seek registration as a Credentialed Diabetes Educator with ADEA, subsequent to fulfilling the additional requirements set by ADEA for this purpose.

Course rules

The course comprises four credit points. Students seeking ADEA credentialing must successfully complete a 40 hour clinical practicum (while enrolled in the course), organised by academic staff and attend a five day seminar at Burwood (Melbourne) scheduled during Trimester two. However please note if you are not registered in Australia as a health practitioner with the appropriate registering body you will not be able to seek credentialing with the ADEA nor will you be able to attend the 40 clinical practicum.
