Beginning with the question, 'When does an ordinary space become a performance arena?' this unit will provide a program of classes and seminars which explore a series of definitions of space: locational, social, interactional, relative space, and proxemics. The principles discovered through the preliminary stage of the unit will be applied through a series of small performance tasks set in alternative performance spaces, and established techniques and theatrical elements used in outdoor performance will be closely considered. The unit will provide a comparative study between studio-based performance techniques and the demands inherent in performance-making processes for external settings.
