Content

Criminology and Psychology have a longstanding history of disciplinary intersections. Psychological theories of criminal behaviour have fuelled considerable interest in criminology while in turn the quest to ‘understand the mind of the criminal’ has been of significant interest in popular culture. In terms of understanding offenders, psychological theories have contributed key perspectives on individual motivations and meanings, the effects of group dynamics and contextual contingencies and the ways in which offenders deal with their offending behaviour. In other areas of criminal justice, psychological perspectives have also made strong contributions to issues of great interest to criminology, ranging from psychological tools for determining suitability of criminal justice workers or the psychological factors shaping their decisions making, the possibilities of offender profiling, the different deliberative strategies for determining sentencing (trials, conferences etc.), different sentencing practices, and an understanding of the impact of different sentencing regimes and the strategies for reintegration. This unit draws upon this work to understand not only the presence of psychological theories and perspectives on crime and punishment but how these tools intersect with, complement and/or challenge other areas of criminological theories
