Contact hours:

3 x 2 hours clinical skills tutorials and up to 5 hours of supporting lectures, seminars, tutorials per week. Up to 3 x 4 days of clinical placements across the trimester.

Content

Students will consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge from previous units, HMO204 and HMO304, on the clinical competencies defined by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (OCANZ). This includes patient examination, recording of optometric clinical data, ocular diagnosis and patient management. They will also explore the clinical knowledge, professional practice skills, legal and ethical issues, and population health matters drawn from the problem-based learning cases presented in HMO305. Cases will span the refractive, binocular, developmental, age-related and systemic disorders that affect the eye. Knowledge and skills gained will be applied in clinical placements.

Assessment

3 x mini clinical skills assessments (passing each is a hurdle requirement) 15%

6 x objective structured clinical examinations (passing 5 out of 6 is a hurdle requirement) 45%

Examination (2 hours) 30%

Peer and tutor evaluation of professional behaviour across the trimester: 10%

Successful completion of all rostered clinical placements is a hurdle requirement.
