Content

This unit introduces students to structural principles and examination construction methodologies applied to simple residential buildings through a systematic examination of their design and construction. Structural topics include: interdiction to permanent and temporary forces acting on structural elements and systems; principles governing selection of and structural systems; structural behaviour and adequacy of building components including scaffolding. Construction topics include:  site operations, sub-structure, super-structure and enclosure methodologies for residential buildings. Construction site operation, prefabrication and assembly methods, materials handling and lifting processes and equipment for construction of residential buildings are also part of this unit.

Assessment

Two assignments (30% group, 30% individual) 60%, examination 40%.  To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit students must achieve at least 40% in the examination.
