Content

This unit integrates knowledge developed  in SRT151 and SRT251 (Construction and Structures 1 and 2) and provides opportunity to further understanding of structural principles and construction methodologies of high-rise  buildings and tall structures through a systematic examination of their design and construction.  Structural topics include:  introduction to permanent and temporary  forces acting on structural elements and systems; principles governing  selection of structural systems; structural behaviour and adequacy of building components including formwork and scaffolding.  Construction topics include: construction methods of deep foundations including piling; basements and waterproofing; building core and lift-shafts including slip-formworks; pre-and-post tensioning; curtain walls and facades.  Construction site operation, prefabrication and assembly methods, materials handling and lifting processes  and equipment for construction of high- rise buildings are also part of this unit.

Assessment

Examination 50%, group assignment 50%.  To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit students must achieve at least 40% in the examination.
