Content

The unit adopts a framework of children as learners who construct their understanding of mathematics and numeracy in the home, the classroom and the wider community.

This unit aims to enhance pre-service teachers' understanding of how mathematics is learned and therefore taught in primary school settings. Students will develop their understanding of the proficiencies and how children’s mathematical concepts develop in the key areas of mathematics: number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability.

Published teaching and learning resources to guide planning and pedagogical decisions to support children’s understanding of mathematical concepts will be drawn on and critiqued. A range of effective teaching strategies and aids, as well as effective ways of incorporating the use of learning technologies will be addressed. State, national, and international curriculum materials will be referred to and used extensively.

Learning Outcomes

ULO These are the Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can:

Alignment to Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs)

ULO1

Critically analyse, synthesise and apply their knowledge of ways in which children's mathematical concepts develop in order to create learning activities that respond to the needs of students

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities

GLO4: Critical thinking

ULO2

Select and justify the use of effective resources for the teaching of primary mathematics and appropriate ways of incorporating the use of learning technologies, including calculators and computers

GLO3: Digital literacy

ULO3

Create challenging, coherent and inclusive learning activities to support children's construction of mathematical concepts

GLO4: Critical thinking

ULO4

Interpret and apply current state, national and international curriculum documents, policies, and programs for teaching and monitoring children's mathematical development

GLO2: Communication

ULO5

Work autonomously to develop their knowledge of contemporary educational issues in mathematics education

GLO6: Self-management
