Content
Global concepts and the theoretical basis of integrated land and sea management, e.g. Integrated Catchment Management and Integrated Marine and Coastal Zone Management are introduced. A case study of a global leader in integrated coastal zone and catchment management (Victoria) is used to illustrate the implementation of the concepts. Approaches taken to the integrated management of catchments and coasts and the roles of government, semi-government and local government authorities, and non-government organisation and the community in management are described and discussed. Overlaps of responsibility, possible conflicts of interest, and unclear boundaries of responsibility are identified. Western Victoria is used as a case study of integrated catchment management. The logic of the catchment as an area for both and management and planning purposes is discussed. Methods used to evaluate the social, biophysical and land-use characteristics and to develop community awareness and involvement in problems with catchment associated with catchments and coasts are described.
Learning Outcomes
ULO | These are the Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can: | Alignment to Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs) |
---|---|---|
ULO1 | Describe, identify, interpret and evaluate the internationally accepted concepts of Integrated Catchment Management and Integrated Marine and Coastal Zone Management. | GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities |
ULO2 | Describe, identify and evaluate the government, semi-government and non government organisations involved in catchment management and coastal management at the national, state and regional levels in Australia. | GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities |
ULO3 | Analyse, compare and contrast the successes and failures in attempts to integrate catchment and coastal management in Victoria and Australia and devise and argue for a revised approach to integration. | GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities |
ULO4 | Evaluate the successes and failures in attempts to integrate catchment and coastal management in practice using Victoria as a case study and communicate and support these findings [as part of a team]. | GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities |
ULO5 | Contrast, compare, interpret, evaluate and judge the current practices of coastal management practitioners in the field. | GLO4: Critical thinking |
