Students will on average spend 150-hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This unit is an enhanced Cloud (online) unit consisting of five modules. The introduction provides an overview of humanitarianism and key issues in humanitarian responses to disasters. The second module takes a critical look at the history and principles of humanitarianism. In the third module, we will learn about the diversity of actors involved in humanitarian response. In the fourth module we examine questions of power and accountability in the humanitarian system and explore the relevance of humanitarianism in our own community. Finally, in module 5, we examine some of the new dilemmas and complexities faced by the humanitarian sector in an era of conflict, climate change and COVID-19. Through the use of case studies and interaction with humanitarian experts from around the world in each module, we will examine the importance of ethical practice to successful humanitarian outcomes. Learning will be enhanced by sharing of experience and exploring relevant case studies of humanitarian responses.
