Two x 2 hours of problem-based learning seminars, 3 x 2 hours of clinical skills practicals, 1 hour ophthalmic dispensing workshop, 1 x 2 hours of team-based learning seminar and up to 10 hours of supporting classes per week for 10 weeks of trimester.
Also, 2 x 7 hours of symposia and 52 hours (2 x 20 and 2 x 6 hours) of clinical placements across trimester.
You will need to access substantial learning resources and experiences in CloudDeakin (Deakin’s online learning environment). Compliance with the Standards in computing, connectivity and student capability are a condition on your enrolment.
In this unit students will further develop and demonstrate their capacity to apply knowledge of the physical and biomedical sciences and the professional and business practices underpinning optometry in the clinical setting.
Students will engage in problem-based learning cases on more complex optometric conditions associated with developmental and refractive disorders of vision, ocular disease, ocular therapy and systemic disorders of vision. Classes, seminars, clinical skills practicals and clinical placements will be offered in support of the problem-based sessions.
Students will continue to gain the competencies for all aspects of optometric practice, as defined by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (OCANZ), including: patient examination, diagnosis and management; optometric dispensing and business; and ethics, law and public health.
Symposia will highlight topical issues in optometric practice. In addition, students will consolidate skills in examining patients under supervision, as well as gain skills in the analysis and presentation of clinical research data.
Assessment task 1: Team-based learning: 10 x individual readiness assurance tests 10% with formative team readiness assurance tests; research data analysis and presentation (2000 words) 15%
Assessment task 2: 12 station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) -passing 10 out of 12 stations is a hurdle requirement 30%;
Assessment task 3: Clinical placement assessment (supervisor observation of patient examinations) 20%
Assessment task 4: Written examination (2 hours), passing is a hurdle requirement 25%
Assessment task 5: Ongoing completion of a reflective clinical logbook is a hurdle requirement
Assessment task 6: Successful completion of the 52 hours of clinical placements is a hurdle requirement
Assessment task 7: Completion of 17% of cases and 8 hours using the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope simulator.
