Content

Humans flourish in healthy and supportive groups and communities. Developing communities and facilitating groups are important methods of social work practice, having significant roles in international, government, non- government, volunteer and for-profit sectors. To practice social work, you will need a critical understanding of theoretical and practical developments in, and approaches to, group work and community development. This unit introduces you to group work processes, including differences in types and styles of participation and leadership, especially as they relate to community level practice. Drawing on the literature, you will critically examine the context, theoretical perspectives, concepts and processes of community development and group work. Through collaborative, experiential tasks, and case study analyses, you will develop skills in group work and community development using a critical practice framework. The aim of the unit is to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills for critically-informed group work and community development in a range of social work settings.
