Second Language Teachers need not only to be able to speak and understand the language they are teaching but have an understanding of how the language works - that is, its systems and rules of usage.
This unit focuses on raising awareness of traditional and modern perspectives of grammar. As such, it is relevant to students’ professional development as language teachers. It develops not only a thorough understanding of the formal aspects of language, but it examines the metalanguage that is needed for talking about these aspects of language. It also introduces participants to current issues concerning the role of grammar in Second Language Teaching and Learning and to various ways in which this knowledge could be used for the teaching of spoken and written discourses.
