Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.
This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.
1 x 3 hour seminar per week, weekly meetings.
Online independent and collaborative learning including 1 x 2 hour online seminar per week, weekly meetings.
Assumed knowledge: Year 12 mathematics or equivalent. The unit SIT190 is recommended for students who did not complete VCE Mathematical Methods 3 and 4.
In this unit you will explore the foundations of discrete mathematics, the basis for mathematical reasoning in applied and computational sciences. You will learn how to rigorously build, from first principles, the tools needed to address a wide range of mathematical and scientific problems. The topics you will cover include number theory, propositional and predicate logic, graph theory, sets, functions, recurrences and combinatorics. SIT192 is designed to prepare you for further study in disciplines where discrete mathematics play a fundamental or foundational role: cryptography, networks, computer programming, and analysis of algorithms.
Understand and apply tools from discrete mathematics to solve complex mathematical problems.
GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilitiesGLO4: Critical thinking
ULO2
Design and implement rigorous problem-solving strategies from first principles.
GLO4: Critical thinking
ULO3
Plan and reflect on task management strategies to successfully fulfil responsibilities
GLO6: Self-management
ULO4
Identify knowledge gaps and effectively seek and use appropriate learning resources to acquire necessary knowledge
GLO3: Digital literacyGLO6: Self-management
The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.
To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must meet certain milestones as part of the Learning Portfolio.
