Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

Scheduled learning activities - campus:

3 x 1 hour classes per week, 3 x 2 hour seminars per trimester, 4 x 3 hour practicals per trimester (Deakin University Queenscliff Marine Science Centre).

Content

The overarching team of this unit is the physiology of marine animals in the context of their environment. The unit focuses on the physiological adaptations of a range of aquatic animals to the demands of their environment, including in challenging environments such as polar regions, deep oceans, estuaries and the tropics. There is an emphasis not only on physiological adaptations to live in extreme environment, but also on how animals react when suddenly exposed to stressful environments. In addition to addressing the fundamental principles of physiology and the endpoints used for studying physiology, there is a significant emphasis on the integration of this knowledge, and its application to short- and long-term stressful situations. Therefore, this unit gives students an opportunity to develop an integrative view that is required to understand how different physiological systems can be variably affected during environmental perturbations. Topics will include: respiration, circulation, thermal physiology, sensory systems, ion and water balance, digestion and metabolism, and locomotion.
