Nur Farisya Binti Abdul Shukor

Portrait of Nur Shukor Bachelor of Arts (Public Relations) 2007

I am currently…
Working as a Public Relations Consultant at Kim Chew Communications,a boutique consultancy firm in Malaysia. Previous to this I was Marketing Communications Manager with InterContinental Kuala Lumpur; a 5 Star Luxury Hotel located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia.

I chose Deakin because…
I was offered an International Student Scholarship Bursary Scheme by Deakin University to come and study in Australia.

After leaving Deakin…
I did an internship with PR consultancy firm, The Reputation Group in Melbourne and I also worked part-time doing waitressing for caterings and events for a time.

I have also been very active in the not-for profit sector, where I have volunteered with; Oxfam Australia, Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities (ADEC), Relay For Life Australia, Burnet Research Institute, Left Right Think Tank (Independent Non-Partisan with a mission to involve young people in public policy) ,Public Relations Institute of Australia – Young Communicators (Victoria),Yayasan Salam Malaysia, Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia and Young Corporate Malaysian (YCM).I am also a sub-comittee of the Malaysian Australian Alumni Council (MAAC).

At university I was inspired…
By the learning environment. The tutorials at Deakin were conducted on a smaller scale with less than 20 students, which allowed me to have one-on-one discussions with my lecturer and therefore gain a better understanding of each subject.

Today, I am motivated by…
Business leaders, motivational speakers and public figures who started their lives with nothing and by working hard became very successful including people like; Sir Richard Branson, Warren Buffet,  Paulo Coelho, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Covey, Jack Canfield and Cathy Freeman among various others.

In my profession it is important to...
Be aware of global markets and not just those within your own country. In my profession, you have to study your surrounds and be the first to act. You must also strive to learn new things every day and most importantly be professional at all times.

Professionally, my proudest achievement is…
Organising the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur Hari Raya Aidilfitri Event Dinner with Yayasan Harapan Kanak-Kanak Malaysia (Malaysian Children Hope Foundation) that supported150 oprhans from 3 orphanage homes (Titian Kasih Home,Nur Syaheera Home and Viviekananda Home Rembau). The guest of Honour and Patron of the Foundation was Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor (Wife of The Prime Minister of Malaysia). This event was held as a part of the hotel's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

I feel a strong connection with…
My Mum. Without her, I wouldn't be where I am today. My mother has inspired me. Previously before she retired, she is one of the few females to be on the Board of Executives of Selangor State Development (PKNS) and also leads a departmental team whilst still managing to successfully juggle life as a mother too. I am always thankful for her support and guidance.

The single-most important issue in the world is...
Learning to respect one another despite our differences in race, colour, ethnic background and religion.

The best thing I would recommend about Deakin is…
The Student Residences.  I would recommend all international students live on campus for a while to fully appreciate university life. I remember there were always lots of fun activities and events organised by the residence committees. I remember one time we had, 'Drag and Devo Night' where people dressed up in all sorts of weird and funny costumes - those were the days!

My course helped my career …
By challenging me to always think outside the square. Coming from Malaysia and being educated in Australia has definitely given me a different and more rounded perspective when it comes to thinking on a global scale.

In the future…
I plan to study a masters degree in Malaysia or even internationally and I will always continue to strive to constantly learn, develop my skills and explore new things every day.
