Interview with Anindita Banerjee

Can you tell us about your time at Deakin? Is there anything you especially remember?
The Honours year is the best time I have invested in myself and my practice. The Creative Arts Faculty at the waterfront is a very close knit group of highly supportive individuals that inspire, strengthen and instigate your thinking and working practice.

What has been your journey since finishing your course? Briefly outline your career path prior to your current role.
Since then I have had several successful exhibitions in Melbourne and interstate. I have won the People's Choice Award at the Wyndham Contemporary Arts Award. I have a part-time job as a Gallery Assistant. The best outcome has been to be accepted as a PhD candidate for further research.

Have you always wanted to pursue the kind of career you have embarked on? If so, when and how did you realise?
Yes.

Although I had always had a passion for the arts I realised that this could be a career option pretty late, after I have had a different career as a Human Resource Consultant in the IT industry.

What advice would you give graduates wanting to pursue a similar profession?
I would ask them to work very hard and keep the passion alive. Do not be frightened to take risks. Engage in meaningful critical feedback/appreciation, learn from them and implement them in your practice.

What do you believe Deakin University has shown you/given you as a person?
Deakin University has given me the confidence to express myself through my creative practice, in a fearless, direct and critical way within a very short period of time.

What are your passions outside your work?
1. To connect people who I think can make magic together and

2. To encourage others to find and follow their passion

How would someone describe you?
Probably as a crazy artist who is always busy either trying to get things done for herself or for others.

What’s your least favourite word?
Can’t.

What is something that amazes you?
The ability of people to lie!
