Student placements
What we offer
We support future librarians and information management professionals by providing practical experience to those currently undertaking ALIA accredited tertiary programs and related GLAMR sector courses. Participating students gain insights into the operations of academic libraries, and work alongside a range of Deakin Library staff to understand their unique roles.
Placements can be scheduled at a time to suit your needs, based on staff availability. Places are limited, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
An informal interview may be required as part of the application process.
How to apply
Our professional placement program has now reached full capacity for 2026. We will continue to accept applications and review them on a case-by-case basis; however, we do not anticipate being able to offer any further placements at this time.

Testimonials
Here's some feedback from one of our previous placement students:
"All members of the Deakin Library team were fantastic and willing to share, help and chat! From my first approach to the front desk introducing myself as a placement student, and that staff member knowing exactly who I was and where I was meant to go, I felt welcomed. The team could not have been more friendly and I am so grateful to them!
This placement has built my confidence in being able to conduct various skills and knowledge in an academic library setting, and inspired me to continue working towards gaining my qualification and aiming for an academic library job.
Deakin Library was able to facilitate a well rounded knowledge base of how an academic library is run, and this was magnified by the one-on-one meetings held with different departments. The goals I had for my placement, and gave to the Library team, were clearly met and exceeded. The team is extremely friendly, and willing to help and answer all of the questions I had. I would 10/10 recommend the Deakin University Library to other placement students."
