What is research data management?

Research data management includes all the activities associated with data other than using the data. Examples include:

  • Storage of data
    • Organising data into directories/folders and using meaningful names
    • Archiving data for long-term preservation
    • Ensuring the security of confidential data
    • Synchronising between different storage locations
  • Sharing data during a project to collaborate with other researchers
  • Describing datasets for future publication, reuse and discovery
  • Backup of data
