Deakin University staff, students and alumni have been recognised for their commitment to excellence and contribution to their communities in the 2023 Australian Day Honours list.

A total of 1047 Australians were recognised in this year's celebrations, including 736 in the General Division of the Order of Australia and awards for meritorious, distinguished and conspicuous service.

Alumna and former staff member Professor Annette Gough was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for her service to tertiary and environmental education.

Professor Gough completed her PhD at Deakin in 1995 and worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer from 1990 to 2005, cementing her reputation as a passionate contributor in the field of environmental education. She worked as an Associate Professor at Deakin from 2002 to 2005.

Another Deakin alumnus and former staff member, Emeritus Professor Bruce Tonge, was appointed an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his contribution to psychiatric medicine, research and tertiary education.

Emeritus Professor Tonge was the patron for the Deakin Child Study Centre (DCSC) at the University from 2012 to 2018. The Centre is a multidisciplinary research centre with a focus on understanding neurodevelopment from the early years of childhood through to adolescence.

Warrnambool Campus Director Alistair McCosh was also recognised as Moyne Shire Council's 2023 Citizen of the Year for his service to his community on the same day the nation's Australia Day Honours list was announced.

McCosh has played a key role in expanding Deakin's Warrnambool campus and is an active supporter of initiatives such as Beyond the Bell, which works to engage youth in education.

Shire Mayor Karen Foster said McCosh was a "highly respected member of the Koroit and wider South-West community" whose service included leading the local netball and football clubs, serving as Deputy Chair of Moyne Health Services, and promoting the region through community events.
