Deakin unveils new $74 million student residences at Burwood campus
Media releaseAnother 575 students will call Deakin University's Melbourne Burwood campus home with the unveiling of the brand new $74 million Waratah Place Student Residences today.
The new residences were officially opened by Deakin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander and the Hon Gayle Tierney MP, Minister for Training and Skills.
The new Waratah Place accommodation brings the total number of beds available for students to live at the Burwood campus to 1,175.
Professor den Hollander said the Waratah Place development was part of Deakin’s commitment to providing the University’s students with the best possible learning experience, as well as access to modern, convenient, affordable and safe housing across all campuses.
“We know having housing that is comfortable, affordable and close to the university campus is directly tied to student success,” Professor den Hollander said.
“We also know just how important it is for students to live in an environment that is safe and supports both 21st century study priorities and lifestyle.
“That’s why the new housing includes multiple study rooms equipped with modern technology, full Wi-Fi coverage, and 24-hour staff support, as well as community-building spaces like a central common area with lounge, games area, and kitchen and dining zones.”
The opening of Waratah Place follows on from the success of Deakin’s transformation of Geelong’s historic T&G building into custom-built student housing, and comes ahead of another 410 beds now under construction at the Waterfront campus.
“We know that when done properly, quality student housing creates wonderful communities that allow students to thrive,” Professor den Hollander said.
“Our students tell us this sense of community is a big factor in their enjoyment of their Deakin experience and we are proud to have ranked first in Victoria for student satisfaction for six consecutive years.”
