Showcase spotlights the future of advanced manufacturing in Victoria

Media release

04 May 2023

An 'Advanced Manufacturing Showcase' at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds Estate on May 5 will highlight future advanced manufacturing capabilities and showcase successful product commercialisation and research and development initiatives in Victoria.

Jointly hosted by Deakin, MEMKO Australia and Dassault Systèmes, the one-day event will deliver valuable insights from industry leaders in four different streams:

  • Learning and Adopting Manufacturing 4.0
  • Industry 4.0 – Driving Manufacturing Excellence
  • Advanced Manufacturing Innovations – the Pathway to Sustainability
  • Australian Advanced Manufacturing – the Roadmap

A highlight of the event will be Guarda System's demonstration of its trailblazing masonry cutting dust suppression technology. Guarda's revolutionary masonry cutting saws and related products are patented and proven in real-world scenarios to significantly reduce respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust on Australian construction sites in line with the aims of Federal and State regulatory bodies.

Guarda's solutions are patented and independently validated to reduce silica dust exposure by between 87 and 99 per cent compared to conventional saws. Exposure to silica dust is a known cause of silicosis, lung cancer and autoimmune diseases. Silicosis is a growing, global health condition, impacting millions of workers and resulting in many thousands of deaths globally every year.

Deakin's Director of Regional Manufacturing Mark Curnow said Deakin was delighted to host the Advanced Manufacturing Showcase in partnership with MEMKO Australia and Dassault Systèmes.

"This free event brings together industry peers, researchers, businesses, and government to showcase developments across our industry and technology partners," Mr Curnow said.

"This event will provide a window on the exciting future of advanced manufacturing in Geelong and Victoria."

The event includes tours of cutting-edge Deakin facilities, including ManuFutures, the Institute for Intelligence Systems Research and Innovation, Carbon Nexus, and the Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training.

MEMKO and Dassault Systèmes will display their pioneering technologies in developing digital twin products in the manufacturing process, battery manufacturing and recycling on the exhibition floor.

The showcase is supported by AMTIL, Bosch Australia, Hanwha Defense Australia, Geelong Manufacturing Council, Regional Partnerships Barwon, the City of Greater Geelong, and Farmers2Founders.

Guarda Systems (exhibitor)

Guarda Systems aims to protect workers from the dangers of silica dust and carbon monoxide through an innovative range of masonry-cutting products, empowering them to 'work hard, breathe easy'. The company develops and manufactures concrete cutting saws that provide the world's best silica dust, slurry, and fume control. Guarda is leveraging off the advanced manufacturing expertise of ManuFutures in readiness for Victorian based scalable commercial manufacturing in 2024 and beyond.

Guarda's lead product, the Guarda Edge Powercutter, is a revolutionary concrete cutting saw, featuring patented 'Tri-Vac Technology' which provides a competitive edge over other engineering controls. This unique technology utilises water and vacuum, working together to remove silica dust, slurry, and fumes, reducing exposure to saw operators and others nearby. Rather than using existing dust suppression technologies that haven't been improved upon for many years, Guarda is the only brand to have developed a new and more effective way of removing silica dust and other harmful by-products during masonry cutting. www.guardasystems.com
