Content

This unit engages with contemporary chemical science practice on modern and sustainable use of materials to explore the big ideas of the discipline. Through inquiry and problem-based learning, we will investigate the material basis for society and molecular basis for sustainability, and develop understanding in how ways of knowledge about the structure, properties, interactions and transformation of matter has a central impact on our daily lives. The progression of these ideas across year 7-10, relating to multimodal approaches to coordinate across the macro, sub-micro and symbolic domains utilised to visualise and represent matter will be addressed. Researched-informed practice on the incorporation of online resources and hands-on practical activities in order to maximize their learning opportunities will be demonstrated. Informed by current research and development, including from Deakin’s Institute for Frontier Materials, and the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities of the Victorian Curriculum, problem-based design projects in modern materials for sustainable development in communities and society will be designed and developed, utilising infield experiences to enrich this experience.
