Binding

Binding is undertaken as part of the collection maintenance process, in order to preserve individual issues of serials, to improve access to the collection by keeping serial issues together and in good order and to assist with preservation and usability of monograph material.  Binding is not considered essential for all items in the collection and the following criteria are normally applied:

Serial binding

Serial titles normally considered for binding include:

• Unique current subscription (i.e. not a duplicate) with no electronic equivalent
• Scholarly content that needs to be preserved
• Heavily used items that are inclined to deteriorate
• Flimsy and/or hard to manage items
• Titles that contain graphic material such as art and architecture

Serial titles not normally considered for binding include:

• Titles for which an equivalent electronic subscription is held
• Titles that are on the JSTOR electronic archive
• Duplicate titles (where a unique copy is already bound)
• Titles which are replaced by microform
• Titles which are replaced by a cumulation or superseded version
• Titles which will not be kept in perpetuity
• Newsletters
• Newspapers

Monograph binding

Unique titles requiring long term preservation may be considered for binding. Short term binding repairs may also be undertaken for heavily used items.
