Auditor client disagreements, governance issues in China, work-life balance, human rights and the business challenges of climate change will be canvassed at Deakin University's first governance organisations and regional development conference this week.

Who: 9.45am - Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG will launch the conference. Justice Kirby was appointed to the High Court in 1996. A passionate advocate for human rights, Justice Kirby was named by The Bulletin as "one of the hundred most influential Australians ever".

10.15am Keynote address - Professor Graciella Chichilnsky will speak on The challenge of climate change: Financial mechanisms and technology after 2012. Professor Chichilnisky worked extensively on the Kyoto Protocol process, creating and designing the concept of the carbon market that has become international law in 2005.

What: Speakers will cover a range of business, economic and social issues, including human rights and the governance, regulation and performance of corporations and other entities in markets and the work place; and the economy.

When: Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22 from 9am.

Where: Amora Hotel, Yarra Room, 649 Bridge Road, Richmond.
