Deakin University has welcomed the Federal Government's announcement this week of new places for university nursing courses.

An extra 1094 Commonwealth supported nursing places have been allocated nationally as part of the Australian Government's 2008-09 Budget Health and Hospitals Reform – Health Workforce initiatives.

Professor Maxine Duke, Head of Deakin's School of Nursing, said the announcement of 40 additional places in the Bachelor of Nursing program at the Geelong Waterfront Campus was a great result for the University and a great result for Geelong.

"I am delighted that we can offer more local students the opportunity to begin their nursing careers in their home town," Professor Duke said.

"The boost in places reflects Deakin's standing as the largest provider of nursing education in Victoria.

"We have more than 2000 students studying nursing at Deakin, with around half of them at our campuses in Geelong and Warrnambool. Our students are always in high demand, with 100 per cent finding work after graduation."

Students studying nursing at Deakin next year will reap the benefits of new, state-of-the-art laboratory to be opened as part of the first stage of the Dennys Lascelles Building refurbishment at the Geelong Waterfront Campus.

"They will also experience local clinical placements, including an acute hospital experience, in the first trimester of their degree thanks to our partnership with Barwon Health," Professor Duke said.

Deakin University offers a Bachelor of Nursing at its campuses in Geelong, Warrnambool and Burwood. Students also have the option of combining the Bachelor of Nursing with degrees in midwifery, public health and health promotion, psychology or commerce.
