Deakin University’s DVC(A) perplexed by claims made by the NTEU
Media releaseDeakin University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor John Rosenberg, said today that he was perplexed by claims made by the NTEU in relation to the trimester system which is being introduced at the University.
Professor Rosenberg said that at no time during a dispute meeting with the NTEU did he say that Deakin's management "hadn't consulted". He did say that, although there was no requirement to consult, the University had in fact consulted.
Professor Rosenberg said, "The Academic Board which represents all academic staff and is attended by Deans, Heads of Schools and all Professors, has discussed the introduction of the trimester timetable on three occasions and discussions have occurred in several other committees and areas of the University."
Also perplexing is a claim by the NTEU that the trimester calendar will reduce flexibility for staff. "In fact the contrary is true," Professor Rosenberg said.
"The trimester system will increase the time available for research and provide considerable flexibility for staff, allowing them to attend major research meetings in the northern hemisphere and improving flexibility regarding sabbatical leave."
