Neil Taylor Sculpture Review at Deakin University Art Gallery
Media releaseThe exhibition on display is a selection of previously unseen and key works by sculptor Neil Taylor. Neil is an alumni of Deakin University having taught in the Media Studies stream at the former Rusden Campus.
He is best known for his complex wire and metal sculptures that are painstakingly welded, bent and fashioned into prisms, cuboids and grid forms. The highly rhythmic and patterned sculptures have highly engaging optical effects, but simultaneously evoke a meditative mood and reflect his fascination with variations in perspective and the use of structure and line.
The exhibition also includes work that shows early experimentation with other mediums such as basalt stone and assemblages of found objects. In addition to these works will be some of the artist's drawings, sketches, journals and animations. Many of these sculptures and preparatory works have never been exhibited before. The exhibition also coincides with a publication in the Australian Animation Series by Deakin University's School of Communication and Creative Arts of Neil Taylor's contribution to animation.
The work ranges in size from intimate miniatures to large and monumental pieces. Several of the works in this exhibition are wall and roof suspended pieces.
Neil Taylor has exhibited extensively in Australia as well as abroad in Paris, Chicago, Seoul and Singapore. His work is represented in major public collections such as The National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia. One of his large works can be seen in the Sculpture Garden at the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Neil Taylor is represented by Niagara Galleries, Melbourne who will host a concurrent exhibition of his latest work from Tuesday to Thursday, 3 to 28 June 2008.
