Deakin research on show to international diplomats

A group of 12 consuls general representing countries as diverse as China, Germany, Malta and Turkey were given an insight into the world class research capabilities of theInstitute for Technology Research and Innovation (ITRI) during a recent visit to the Geelong Technology Precinct(GTP) at Deakin University's Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds.

The international diplomats visited the GTP as part of a visit to the Geelong region organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The purpose of the visit was for the diplomats to see firsthand the capabilities to be found in regional centres.

In welcoming the visitors, Professor Philip Clarke, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) highlighted Deakin's international ties.

"Deakin University has strong and ongoing relationships with many of the Consulates here today and we are keen to work closely with you all.

"Deakin has a distinct international outlook. We have over 7,000 international students – about 20 per cent of our total student population – and are committed to international engagement through research, teaching and pursuing cooperative ventures," he said.

Also on hand to welcome the guests was Professor Peter Hodgson, whose recent award of an Australian Laureate Fellowship was acknowledged by Professor Clarke, and the City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell.

During their tour the visitors saw examples of Deakin's work in robotics, metals and carbon fibre as well as research facilities such as the electron microscope.

Professor Clarke said the visit was an excellent opportunity to present the excellent work being done at ITRI to an international audience.

Visiting Deakin were the consuls general of China, Indonesia, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Croatia, Oman, El Salvador, Chile, Malta, Lebanon, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
