Deakin University statement regarding Mahindra Satyam decision

Deakin University has expressed disappointment in Mahindra Satyam's decision not to proceed with the development of the technology and learning centre at the University's Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds.

"This is disappointing news not only for the University but also for the Geelong community," said Deakin's Chief Operating Officer Graeme Dennehy.

"We are however delighted with the company's offer of 100 internship places for our students.

"This initiative will provide Deakin information technology students with 12-14 weeks training at Mahindra Satyam's world-class Software and Development Campus at Hyderabad in India.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience at an international level and we look forward to working with the company to explore opportunities to extend the program to other areas such as engineering and materials science."

Despite the decision by Mahindra Satyam, Mr Dennehy believed the potential to attract industry partners to Geelong was very promising and that Deakin would continue to explore these opportunities.

"The University is committed to advancing the interests of Geelong, where we have two campuses. We will continue to work with the Geelong community in identifying future strategic partnerships that could generate new employment for the region along with achieving the University's teaching and learning objectives."
