Farmers and fishers in a number of communities throughout Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia are being asked to share their tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle when times are tough.

Researchers at Deakin University and the University of Tasmania are inviting farmers and fishers to take part in a study looking at what they do to achieve and maintain good physical and mental health in difficult times.

"External pressures such as drought or low commodity prices are known to have physical and mental health consequences for farming communities," said Deakin University researcher Professor Sue Kilpatrick.

"With the growing burden on health services in rural areas, it is important to find ways to encourage people to maintain good health.

"We are calling on local farmers to help us get a clear picture of what they do to maintain their health, especially in difficult times.

"Understanding their experiences will assist health services, local government and others to plan appropriate services and facilities to best meet the physical and mental health needs of the local farming communities."

Participation in this project will involve a 45 minute interview with a member of the research team.

People interested in taking part in the project can contact Professor Sue Kilpatrick on (03) 5563 3138, emailpvcrr@deakin.edu.au or Dr Susan Johns on (03) 6324 4008, email Susan.Johns@utas.edu.au.

The study, 'Staying Healthy: Behaviours and services used by farmers and fishers', is funded by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation.
