Artists and musicians - a day for sampling or remixing as you please
Media releaseAs with all good ideas the decision to hold Deakin University's Digital Sampling/Remix Culture Forum, Workshop, Film and Music Showcase started with a chat over a drink between Deakin University Associate Professor Dan Meagher and his friend, a founding member of The Avalanches, Darren Seltmann.
"That conversation triggered my interest in the legal, creative and cultural issues of digital sampling and the remix culture and was the genesis of the Forum we are holding on Friday, July 6 at the Waterfront Campus of Deakin Uni in Geelong," Dan said.
"My aim is to get as many people interested in the whole area – whatever their angle might be – to come along, have a listen to the legal forum in the morning or come along to the workshop and participate or just enjoy the film and party afterwards.
"I'm especially keen to do so in Geelong which just doesn't get the opportunity or access to these sorts of events very often."
Dan said the day would begin with a Forum.
"A range of speakers - including audio/visual DJ's Naysayer and Gilsun, Australian Copyright Council Executive Director Fiona Phillips and Australian Law Reform Commissioner Professor Jill McKeough – will discuss the cultural, artistic, economic and legal implications of collage, homage and digital sampling," he said.
"This will be followed by a legal workshop to be run by Jules Munro - a partner at Simpsons one of Australia's leading entertainment law firms – with help from Darren Seltmann.
"The workshop is for those who use digital sampling in the production of their music and art.
" It will explain in clear and simple terms your legal rights and obligations and the commercial and creative realities involved in digital sampling.
A genuine highlight of the day will be the Australian premiere of the documentary "Copyright Criminals" and the visit to Australia by its writer and producer Kembrew McLeod, an independent film maker and Associate Professor of Communications Studies at the University of Iowa.
"Copyright Criminals traces the history of music sampling where for more than 30 years, hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions."
Dan said a Question and Answer session with Kembrew and Darren would immediately follow the screening.
"The day will conclude with a Music Showcase starting at 9pm at Basement 159 in the Geelong CBD.
"It will feature local boys 1Fish, Two Fish, Lord Fitness, Bud Bounder and lots more .
"All the events – the Forum, Workshop, Film and Showcase – will be free but registration is necessary as places are limited."
