Deakin Vice Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, has warmly welcomed today's announcement by the Federal Government that Geelong will be the headquarters for the new Sports Technology Innovation Partnership.

The new partnership could grow Australia's sports industry exports by at least 75 percent.

"Deakin has always had a deep and broad interest in sport and sport technology and its relationship to excellence to health and to rehabilitation," she said.

"We offer programs in sport law, sport health and sport psychology, as well as in rehabilitation and we have one of the best programs in the country in Exercise and Nutrition Sciences.

"Our carbon fibre research through the Australian Future Fibres Research and Innovation Centre has application in sport technology in the ongoing quest for lightweight materials and sporting equipment.

"This places us in a good position to inform policy and discussion on sport related issues in the community and to connect with the sports industry."
