Deakin University Chancellor Mr John Stanhope AM has been appointed the Convenor of the University Chancellors Council (UCC) for the next three years.

Appointed by the Council, the Convenor's main responsibilities include the organisation and facilitation of the twice-yearly UCC meetings and the biennial National Conference on University Governance (NCUG), as well as working with the UCC members and sub-committee to explore current issues affecting the tertiary education sector in Australia.

On hearing of his appointment, Mr Stanhope outlined three priority areas for his term as Chancellor:

  1. Establishing clear lines of coordination between the UCC and Universities Australia – to ensure one representative body for universities.
  2. Influence and inform government policy – via the consolidated representative university voice.
  3. Lifting the reputation of universities in the eyes of the government and the community – by raising awareness that knowledge creation by universities is delivering innovation, economic advancement and culture and environmental wellbeing, and is integral to the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Mr Stanhope has taken the reins from current Convenor, Mr Stephen Gerlach AM, Chancellor of Flinders University.
