Deakin congratulates 2020 Queen's Birthday honours recipients

Deakin University acknowledges and congratulates its staff, students, alumni and friends who have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday honours list for 2020.

Officially announced Monday 8 June, the honours list highlights those whose achievements and service has made a positive impact on their community and beyond.

Members of the Deakin community recognised in the awards include alumni such as former Victorian Premier Dr Denis Napthine AO – who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to the people and Parliament of Victoria, to veterinary science, and to the community.

Also recognised this week were current and former Deakin staff such as Colonel Bede Galvin CSC and Dr Frances Devlin-Glass OAM, as well as those recognised for their contributions to women's sport, marine science, education, healthcare, dance movement therapy and much more.

Deakin recognises and congratulates the following staff, students, alumni and members of the Deakin community; and will add other Deakin recipients to this honours list as required:

Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)

  • The Honourable Dr Denis Vincent Napthine – Alumnus – For distinguished service to the people and Parliament of Victoria, particularly as Premier, to veterinary science, and to the community.
  • Rear Admiral Jonathan Dallas Mead – Alumnus – For distinguished service to the Royal Australian Navy in senior management and command roles.

Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

  • Dr Jennifer Anne Abbey – Alumna – For significant service to the health of aged persons, particularly to pain care management.
  • Ms Jay Annette Bonnington – Former Deakin Council member – For significant service to the community through support for charitable organisations, and to business.
  • Air Commodore Graham John Edwards – Alumnus – For exceptional service to the Australian Defence Force in aerospace acquisition and sustainment, and organisational capability development.
  • Group Captain Jennifer Marie Fantini – Alumna – For exceptional service in aerospace maintenance reform, maintenance productivity improvements, and aircraft maintenance interoperability strategy development for the Royal Australian Air Force.
  • Mr John Alan Hall – Alumnus – For significant service to community mental health, and to business.
  • Air Commodore Andrew Craig Heap – Alumnus – For exceptional service in aerospace capability management, operational support, and organisational development for the Australian Defence Force.
  • Ms Jerril Samantha Rechter – Alumna – For significant service to community health, to sports administration, and to the arts.
  • Rear Admiral Sarah Edith Sharkey – Alumna – For exceptional service to the Australian Defence Force in the management of healthcare.
  • Dr Jeanette Esther Watson – Alumna – For significant service to marine science and ecology, and to professional associations.
  • Councillor Arron Richard Wood – Deakin volunteer guest lecturer and event speaker – For significant service to local government, to the environment, and to the community of Melbourne.

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)

  • Dr Frances Maree Devlin-Glass – Staff Alumna – For service to education, and to the Irish community.
  • Dr Kim Frances Dunphy – Alumna – For service to community health through dance movement therapy.
  • Mrs Isabella Fay Edgoose – Alumna and Donor – For service to the community, and to education.
  • Ms Amara Hamid – Alumna – For service to women, and to the multicultural community of Melbourne.
  • Mrs Amanda Milledge – Donor – For service to the community through charitable foundations.
  • Ms Julie Millowick – Alumna (antecedent institution) – For service to the visual arts, particularly to photography.
  • Mr John Nimon Mooney – Faculty of Arts & Ed Professional Advisory Board Member - For service to education, and to professional organisations.
  • Mrs Pauline Andrea Kontelj – Alumna – For service to the community of Geelong.
  • Ms Diane Westaway – Alumna (antecedent institution) – For service to women's sport and recreation, and to charitable initiatives.
  • Mr Marcus Westbury – Deakin volunteer and former graduation speaker – For service to the contemporary arts.

Ambulance Service Medal (ASM)

  • Mr Alan John Morrison – Alumnus.

Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC)

  • Lieutenant Colonel James Lachlan Bryant – Alumnus – For outstanding achievement as the Recruiting Liaison Officer - Army.
  • Lieutenant Colonel Clare Louise O'Neill – Alumnus – For outstanding achievement in the field of Professional Military Education and strategic engagement.

Bar to the Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC and Bar)

  • Colonel Bede Thomas Galvin – Current student and Centre for Defence staff member – For outstanding achievement in the design and execution of Army and Australian Defence Force collective training.

Commendation for Distinguished Service

  • Colonel Jason Stuart Groat – Alumnus – For distinguished performance of duties in warlike operations as the Commander Task Group Taji VIII on Operation OKRA in Iraq from November 2018 to June 2019.
