Deakin welcomes new Head of School for Humanities and Social Sciences

Deakin University has announced Professor Andrew Hope as its new Head of School for Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Education.

Professor Hope joins Deakin from Federation University where he was Dean of the School of Arts, Professor of Criminology and Deputy Chair of Academic Board.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Education Professor Vanessa Lemm said she was delighted to welcome Professor Hope on behalf of the Deakin community.

"Under Professor Hope's leadership, the School will continue to build and sustain transformative partnerships with our communities that deliver outstanding education and research programs," Professor Lemm said.

"Professor Hope holds a PhD in sociology with interdisciplinary research interests and expertise across education, surveillance, digital cultures, young people and social control and resistance.

"His interdisciplinary perspective has shaped his vision for the essential role that humanities and social sciences play in addressing the fundamental challenges facing the world.

"Bringing this vision to action, Professor Hope has led curriculum innovation in 'employable arts' and education programs that equip graduates with the knowledge and capabilities they need for the future.

"Professor Hope is motivated by his deep commitment to education and research excellence that contributes to the public good, and to communities locally and globally."

Professor Lemm paid tribute to the many contributions of Professor Jack Reynolds during his term as Head of School, Humanities and Social Sciences.

"Professor Reynolds’ leadership of the School and commitment to its disciplines and the strength of education and research programs has been essential to ensuring the School's continued success through the challenges of the pandemic."

Professor Andrew Hope:

Professor Andrew Hope has worked as a university academic in the United Kingdom and Australia for more than two decades, mostly within management and leadership positions. Before joining Federation University, Andrew was Deputy Head of the School of Social Sciences at Adelaide University and Head of the Department of Sociology, Criminology and Gender Studies. He is an experienced sociologist with an international research profile in school surveillance technologies and young people's risky online activities. More recently these interests have expanded to include pre-crime and problematic anti-terrorism policies aimed at youths.
