Deakin's new Multideck Carpark opens near Geelong's Waterfront
Media release
Deakin University has opened its new Multideck Carpark at the Waterfront Campus, providing secure, undercover parking for students, staff and visitors.
The four-level carpark, between Brougham and Smythe Streets, replaces the Waterfront Carpark which was sold to make way for the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre currently under development on Geelong's waterfront.
Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said he was delighted to open the new carpark ahead of schedule in time for the start of a busy Trimester one.
'The timing for today's official opening couldn't be better. The Waterfront Campus is buzzing with activity, and we know students are embracing opportunities to be on campus,' Professor Martin said.
'The Multideck Carpark adds significant value to the experience of our students and staff and ensures they have access to safe and secure parking within walking distance of the Waterfront Campus and right beside our student accommodation building, Brougham House.'
The Multideck Carpark provides more than 550 parking spaces over three undercover levels and one rooftop deck and includes EV charging facilities.
On one side of the building, an open-air parking area provides space for larger vehicles and, on the other side, a catenary-lit laneway links Smythe and Brougham streets, with the opportunity for pop-up events such as markets and other activations.
On ground level in Brougham Street, a DeakinACTIVE Wellness Centre is up and running with a weekly program of 48 group fitness classes open to the public including HIIT, bar pump, boxing, circuit, Pilates and yoga. More information on classes is available here.
Kevin Murphy, Deakin's Executive Director of Infrastructure, Property and Precincts, said the Multideck Carpark's thoughtful design integrated well with the streetscape and included acoustic and visual barriers.
'Lighting within the car park is sensor-operated and the facility will be monitored by Deakin security and CCTV online,' Mr Murphy said.
The Multideck Carpark will operate seven days a week from 7am to 10pm, with extended opening hours for special events.
Visitors and the public have access to the carpark after 4.30pm on weekdays and on weekends (fees apply).
