Deakin University Art Gallery's second exhibition for 2015 is a new site-specific project by Gosia Wlodarczak, a Polish-born, Melbourne-based artist.

Wlodarczak has created a series of three site-specific wall drawings which explore the notion that drawing and language are coded modes of communication.

On arrival to the exhibition, visitors are given a set of instructions by the artist called INSTRUCTION FOR THE VIEWER. Using these instructions, visitors can decode the three messages on the walls of the gallery.

The first piece will be completed by the artist. The second piece will be completed by staff at the Deakin University Art Gallery using a set of instructions provided by the artist called INSTRUCTION FOR THE MAKER. The third piece will be a collaboration with visitors to the exhibition during Gosia's four-day residency from 28 April to 1 May.

Visitors can jot their chosen word on a piece of paper, submit it to the suggestion box, and Gosia will randomly select two words each day to encode and add to the third piece. The end result will be a unique "collaborative concrete poem".

For Gosia, drawing is a means of capturing what is essentially a performative practice. Not only recording the evidence of the artists' hand, Gosia's drawings trace the complex relationships between her physical senses and her immediate environment.

"One mode of communication is language. Language is a code. When words are the mode of communication, each individual uniquely 'remakes', 'interprets', 'translates', 'de-codes' words. Another mode of communication is drawing. Drawing is a language. Like language, drawing is a code", she explains.
