Statement from Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin:

I am announcing today that, after a hugely successful term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Alfred Deakin Professor Julie Owens has decided to retire this year and will depart Deakin at the end of July.

Julie took up her position as Deakin’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research in December 2018 and has led a series of initiatives that have transformed research performance across our University.

There are many metrics we could highlight to illustrate the impact of Julie’s leadership, and I would call out in particular the growth in Deakin’s research income to $120.8 million in 2021 and further towards $130 million in 2022, rankings improving almost every year and Deakin’s firmly established position into the second group of eight in Australia for research performance.

Most recently she has also lead the work on Deakin’s $384 million Trailblazer bid for the REACH Recycling and Clean Energy Hub project, overseen a number of critical projects through the Victorian Higher Education Strategic Investment Fund (VHESIF) to develop a range of new research facilities and infrastructure, and led the University’s Streamline project to deliver new and better ways of working for the Deakin research community.

I would like to thank Julie for her immense contribution to Deakin’s research endeavour and her commitment to our University. We will commence a recruitment process this month to identify Julie’s successor as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research.

We will have more to say about Julie’s contribution closer to her leaving, but for now I know you will join me in thanking Julie for her leadership and wishing her all the very best for her retirement.

ENDS
