Media release

10 December 2021

I am announcing today that Professor Karen Hapgood has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at Swinburne University. She will depart Deakin early next year and take up her new role in March 2022.

Karen commenced at Deakin in March 2017 as Head of the School of Engineering before taking up the role of Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment (SEBE) in July 2018.

With an excellent understanding of the disciplines in the Faculty and a creative vision for its future, Karen has made an outstanding contribution to SEBE, which continues to have a significant influence on Deakin’s success and reputation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karen for her excellent leadership of the Faculty, alongside her substantial input to my Executive and her commitment to Deakin. I wish her every success for the future.

As we commence an international recruitment process, I have appointed Dr David Halliwell, Industry Professor and Deputy Dean of SEBE, as Acting Executive Dean.

David has more than 25 years of research and management experience working across STEM-related disciplines, including research and executive leadership roles in the public and private sectors.

David currently holds several governance roles, including membership of the Faculty Executive and Faculty Board. His current role provides leadership, mentoring and coaching across SEBE to drive industry engagement and help deliver on the University’s strategic plan.
