Deakin librarian enjoys best of both worlds

Deakin University's new Warrnambool campus librarian Bec Muir realises the digital world is taking over but she says that's not necessarily a bad thing.

While she still likes to relax with a good book, Ms Muir says technology has improved services for students and other library users.

'There is an increasing trend across libraries worldwide towards digital content, both for academic and community libraries,' she said.

'There are many benefits associated with this; there is more information on demand and it's more relevant and up-to-date and easier to access.

'As a librarian I still have a big fondness for traditional media as well. You have to have a good balance and that’s something I think most libraries do quite well, including Deakin Warrnambool.'

Despite the move to digitalisation, Ms Muir doesn't see printed books disappearing any time soon.

'Curling up in front of a log fire with a kindle isn’t quite as appealing as a nice fiction book,' she said.

Ms Muir replaced Dorothy Rooney who recently retired as Warrnambool campus librarian after 26 years in the role.

Ms Muir comes to Warrnambool from Geelong Regional Library Corporation where she was branch librarian at Lara. Prior to that she worked for the University of Tasmania for more than four years.

However, becoming a librarian wasn't her original career plan.

'I fell into it by accident - I was halfway through my Bachelor of Arts honours degree in sociology and psychology in Hobart looking at burnout and stress in caring professions when I was lucky enough to get a casual short-term library officer position,' she said.

'I quite liked libraries and decided to pursue further study.'
