A new vodcast series has given students in Deakin University's School of Information Technology the opportunity to hear from some of the big names in tech.

The vodcasts were launched in Trimester 1 this year to help students connect what they are learning in their studies to what is going on in industry.

Known as the Happy (Half) Hour Vodcasts, each episode is a thirty-minute discussion by Deakin academics and industry experts on hot tech topics, tips, tools and techniques.

To date, industry experts have included:

  • Abbas Kudrati, Asia Pacific Lead Chief Cybersecurity Advisor, Microsoft
  • Venkat Subramanian, Atlassian (BitBucket) Group Product Manager
  • Greg Roebuck, founder of carsales.com.au
  • Scott Dann, People Programs Lead (Technology) at Seek
  • Gopi Karunamoorthy, Talent Acquisition Manager, Verizon Asia Pacific
  • PK Rasam, Chief Blockchain Officer, RUBIX

Organisers in the school say the aim of the vodcasts is to augment and extend what students learn across their course study and invite industry and academics into the conversation, further enriching students’ learning so that they understand the tech trends and market when graduating and entering the tech workforce.

Professor Peter Eklund is Associate Head of School, Development, in the School of IT.

'Exposure to successful tech industry stories through the vodcasts provide our students with a glimpse into working life,' Professor Eklund says.

'These condition our own students’ expectations about life after university. They help our students better understand what a successful tech career looks like.'

Episodes are published fortnightly during the trimester and are available to all undergraduate and postgraduate School of IT students.
