The Casper test

Casper is an online, scenario-based test that assesses key personal and professional qualities for a teaching career. It's required by some teaching programs as part of the admissions process. Results are valid for one application cycle, from August to the following July.

When is the Casper test required?

If you're applying for an initial teacher education course starting in 2025 or 2026, and the Casper test is a course requirement, you’ll need to complete it to be considered for an offer.

Initial teacher education courses at Deakin are for those looking to become qualified teachers for the first time, either through an undergraduate degree like a Bachelor of Education or a graduate-entry degree like a Master of Teaching for those with an existing degree wishing to transition into teaching.

Casper helps us understand who you are beyond your academic results, highlighting important traits like integrity, empathy and communication skills. It’s part of a fairer, more holistic admissions process used by universities worldwide – and it’s your opportunity to show your readiness for a career in education and human services.

Deakin will cover your Casper test fee

If you're starting an initial teacher education course in 2025 or 2026 and need to take the Casper test, Deakin will cover the $55 test fee. You don’t need to apply – we’ll identify eligible students and notify you during the admissions process.

What is the Casper test?

Casper (computer-based assessment for sampling personal characteristics) is an assessment used by institutions offering initial teacher education courses to evaluate applicants' suitability for teaching. It consists of eight scenarios (two video-based and six text-based), each followed by three open-ended questions, with a five-minute time limit for responses. The test assesses non-academic attributes such as communication, collaboration, ethics, empathy, equity, motivation, problem-solving, professionalism, resilience and self-awareness.

Do you need to take the Casper test?

Not all teaching courses at Deakin require the Casper test. Check your course entry requirements carefully when applying. If your course does require Casper, you'll need to complete the test by the specified deadline to remain eligible for an offer.
