Deakin Finalists are breaking down walls

Congratulations to Deakin’s five finalists in the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year awards.

Held alongside The World Science Summit and coinciding with the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9th, 1989), the Falling Walls conference brings together the most recent breakthroughs and outstanding projects in science and society.

This year, in its eleventh year, the conference moved online with the global virtual showcase offering free digital access to everyone.

The awards answer the question ‘Which are the next walls to fall?’ as a result of scientific, technological, economic and sociological breakthroughs.

This year, Deakin has five finalists across the 10 categories: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities, Science in the Arts, Digital Education, Science and Innovation Management, Emerging Talents, Science Start-Ups, Science Engagement.

Our finalists were:

Professor Peter Macreadie – Life sciences category
Breaking the Wall of Climate Change

Professor Michael Berk – Life sciences category
Breaking the Wall of Novel Therapies for Mental Illness

Professor Alexander Newman – Social Sciences and Humanities Category
Breaking the Walls faced by refugees in accessing education and obtaining employment 

Dr Maria Palacios - Science Engagement Category
Breaking the Wall to Nature-Based Finance 

Dr Shariful Islam – Emerging Talents Category
Breaking the Wall of Heart Failure
