Undergraduate
Undergraduate (your first degree)
An undergraduate degree is generally completed between two to four years, depending on the pattern of study and any recognition of prior learning you may have. Associate degrees, bachelor and bachelor with honours are all undergraduate degrees.
Postgraduate
Postgraduate (further study)
A postgraduate qualification can be undertaken by students who have already completed an undergraduate degree or possess significant, demonstrable work experience. Postgraduate courses include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters and PhDs, as well as specialist programs for industry professionals.
Research
Higher Degrees by Research (supervised research)
Research degrees are research based master’s or PhD programs that focus on a single area of expertise. They provide students the opportunity to carry out highly specialised research under expert supervision.

'With many activities done by today's individuals and industries proving to be harmful to the natural environment, I wanted to contribute to the development of processes that are better for people and the planet at large.
The most rewarding part of my course was the opportunity to get involved with the research that was being done at the university. I took up my own research project, which allowed me to develop not only laboratory skills, but more importantly, skills like being able to organise experiments based on available time/resources and critically evaluating previous research to inform the research that I did.
I surprised myself at how I'd been able to build my skills and experience to a point where I had a job in science after I graduated. When I started studying, I doubted that I had the initiative, let alone the skills, to make the inroads that I have over the past three years.'
