A forum this Saturday at Deakin University's Warrnambool Campus will consider future options for higher education in the region.

A part of DeakinWeek activities, the Warrnambool Education Forum will be held on the Campus at 10.30am on Saturday 31 October.

Dr Bernadette Walker-Gibbs, Senior Lecturer in Education and Warrnambool School of Education co-ordinator, said the forum would discuss the potential for rural campuses to deliver 21st century education.

Dr Walker-Gibbs said the event aimed to build on the close connections between the Campus and the local community.

"There will be a series of speakers outlining where they perceive rural and regional education to be going in the 21st century, but just as importantly we want to hear from people in the local community with their vision for the future," she said.

"The forum is part of the School of Education's commitment to developing responsive teacher education programs.

"There are a lot of good quality education possibilities for the future and the forum will help Deakin consider the best way forward for Warrnambool to ensure we continue to attract and retain students."

The forum will discuss measures to improve the aspirations of local students, different pathways open to students, and research options for the Campus.

Speakers at the forum will include:

  • Warrnambool College principal Mary Pendergast
  • Deakin University Pro Vice-Chancellor (Rural and Regional) Professor Sue Kilpatrick
  • Deakin University Associate Professor Simone White, Lecturer, Faculty of Arts and Education
  • Deakin University Associate Professor Mary Dixon, School of Education
  • Deakin University Mr Phillip Dawson, Course Coordinator, Associate Degree of Arts, Business & Sciences.

People wishing to attend the forum in room J.2.27, Level 2, Building J, Warrnambool Campus should book with Kelly Reaburn on 5227 1426 or kelly.reaburn@deakin.edu.au.
