Changing lives around the world

Deakin University will be offering more scholarships than ever before thanks to our generous alumni. Over the past three years we have received overwhelming support for scholarship programs that have changed the lives of hundreds of Deakin students and thousands of people around the world.

The Change 100 Lives campaign, which ran from 2013 to 2015, began with an ambitious goal to raise $1million. Thanks to the generosity of more than 2000 alumni we exceeded this target and have been able to create much needed scholarships for disadvantaged students. Scholarships break down the barriers that prevent talented people from accessing a university education. They can change the lives of individuals and their families for generations. These scholarships cover tuition fees, travel expenses and emergency financial assistance, supporting ready and willing students to achieve their dream of a tertiary education.

In 2016, having achieved our goals to help our local students and community, we decided to venture further afield and launched the Open minds, Open possibilities campaign for Humanitarian Leadership Scholarships. As the numbers of crises around the world multiply, the need for highly trained humanitarian leaders is also increasing. These scholarships will support humanitarian workers to complete our world leading Humanitarian Leadership Programme, giving them the essential skills needed to save lives in the most dangerous places on the planet.

The response from donors has been remarkable, with over $50,000 raised thus far. This money will support 10 humanitarian workers to complete our program. These graduates will, in turn, help people at their most vulnerable point in their lives. To find out more about this program visit Open minds, Open possibilities.

Australians are increasingly recognising the power of philanthropy to change individual lives and the world around us. The gift of education is particularly important as it can have an impact well beyond the individual who receives it. We are grateful to our alumni for recognising the importance of supporting education and giving talented individuals the opportunity to gain a Deakin education.
