Content

This unit explores influential works from the Western dramatic canon while examining their cultural contexts, assumptions, and lasting impacts on contemporary theatre practice. Students will analyse dramatic elements of plot, story, character, theme and language with reference to different systems of rehearsal, and examine the strengths and limitations of these systems for post dramatic and devised performance. Focussing on the roles of director and dramaturg for contemporary performance, the unit provides students with workshop exercises and practical strategies for reading, rehearsing and performing dramatic texts, and includes a live performance of a chosen scene in the final week of the trimester.
