Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150-hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus

1 x 3-hour seminar per non-placement teaching week (approx. 8-9 weeks)

Time engaging in learning activities is expected to total a combined equivalent of 8-10 hours per week. This includes attendance at the seminar, engagement with materials, responses to tasks, regular forum posting and responding to others, scheduled synchronous online discussions and independent study.

In-person attendance requirements

Students who are completing professional experience (placements) are not required to attend classes or scheduled synchronous sessions during the placement.

Content

This unit examines how young children (birth – 5 years) develop language and literacy skills. Students will gain advanced knowledge of the development of language and literacy, and their important relationship with other areas of conceptual learning and development.

The Unit develops critical understanding of the influence of family and community contexts on children’s acquisition of language and literacy; pedagogical strategies for addressing and promoting children’s learning in these areas; activities and programming for language and literacy learning; identifying and utilising appropriate resources to further language, literacy development with children birth to five years in early childhood settings.
