This unit is only available to students enrolled in H777 Master of Advanced Nursing, H771 Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing and H779 Master of Mental Health Nursing.

Note: Students must contact the Course Director Monica Peddle on for information and approval before enrolment into the Thesis units.


Must have course Weighted Average Mark (WAM) equal or greater than 65.

Study commitment

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - online

Online independent and collaborative learning and 4 x 2 hour online scheduled seminars.


The Code of Good Practice in Supervision of Higher Degrees by Research outlines the responsibilities of students and supervisors and expected outcomes.


This unit comprises the first component of undertaking an individual research project and preparation of a research thesis related to nursing and nursing practice. In this unit, you are required to describe the background to your study and complete a comprehensive literature review of the existing research evidence in the cognate area to identify the science/research gap and determine the research question/s and/or hypothesis to be tested. Using this information you will, in collaboration with your supervisor/s, develop a draft outline of your research proposal.
