Content
There are two practicum units in the Master of Professional Psychology Course, HPY725 and HPY729. Successful completion of the practicum units requires 300 hours of practicum and skills training. The 300 hours occurs across the whole year of the course, spanning both HPY725 and HPY729.
Practicums consists of three key activities; (i) pre-practice workshops; (ii) placement experience; (iii) supervision.
The practicum units are designed to equip students with a range of generalist psychology skills and an awareness of professional issues. Students will fast-track the translation and integration of academic coursework learning into real life application. Students will also develop professional identity and practice through early adoption of supervision and professional learning plans as well as case formulation.
i) PRE-PRACTICE WORKSHOPS
To prepare for placement, students will participate in a number of practitioner led workshops covering topics such as professional identity and applied suicide intervention training as well as the RISK AWARE online program which is aimed at increasing students' knowledge and ability to assess potential risks within placement environments.
ii) PLACEMENT EXPERIENCE
Students will engage with simulated case work and discussions as part of HPY725, and then undertake a placement with an organisation as part of HPY729. Placements are arranged in consultation with the Placement Coordinator.
iii) SUPERVISION
Students will also engage in supervision for their simulated cases and have regular supervision as part of their placement within an organisation.
Hurdle requirement
- Must pass Assessment tasks 1, 2 and 3
- Attendance and successful completion of the minimum number of placement days is a hurdle requirement for this unit.
The three assessment tasks outlined above in this unit are hurdle requirements. Students must complete all four hurdle requirements in order to pass this unit. Failure to complete any one of these tasks will result in the student failing the unit, preclude the admission of the student to the next practicum unit and may result in the student’s exclusion from the course. If students fall ill during their practicum, make-up days will need to be arranged so that the minimum requirement of placement days is met. Requirements as to practicum for Masters level qualifications in psychology are set by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as part of the accreditation requirements of the professional body.
